Aims

The Lived Experience Advisory Panel for Prescribed Drug Dependence is made up of people with both lived and professional experience of dependence and withdrawal from prescribed psychiatric and painkilling drugs.

It is a coalition of people who can play a representational role for those who have experienced prescribed drug dependence, initially with the aim of offering experience and information to organisations setting up new services to support this patient group.

The panel includes patients, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, peer support workers, researchers and managers of existing dedicated services. Its set up has been facilitated by the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Prescribed Drug Dependence (2020 to present) and its secretariat.

Resources

Members of the panel have produced these resources for anyone creating services for people who are dependent on, or trying to withdraw from, prescribed drugs. We are happy to consult on them and if needed help tailor them for different environments.

The initial results of the survey capturing people’s experience with stopping or trying to stop antidepressants in the UK following the June 2023 BBC Panorama ‘The Antidepressant Story’  are now available.

There is also a page of links to existing information / resources for individuals.

Based on research into real experiences, this statement summarises what patients need from healthcare services at each stage of the process of encountering dependence forming prescribed drugs.

LEAP for Prescribed Drug Dependence members have identified the components a helpline and website service needs to deliver based on the Statement of patient needs.

NHS England has published a commissioning “Framework for action: optimising personalised care for patients at risk of, or experiencing, prescribed drug dependence or withdrawal” and we would be pleased to work with any ICB interested in implementing the framework.
Service blueprint ideas created by the panel are available here for download.
